A Small Village with a World-Class Reputation

There are places you can barely find on a map, yet every surfer knows them. Imsouane is one of them.

Nestled between the Anti-Atlas mountains and the wild Atlantic, this small fishing village sits about 90 kilometres north of Agadir on Morocco's Atlantic coast. No big hotels, no tourist crowds — at least, that was the case for a long time. But Imsouane has quietly become one of the world's most coveted surf destinations over the past few years. So how did it happen?

A Secret Too Good to Keep

For years, Imsouane was a genuine hidden gem among surfers. Its remote location, rough roads and lack of public transport kept it well under the radar. Those who made it there guarded their discovery like a treasure.

Then came social media, and with it, the end of the silence.

Today, thousands of surfers from around the world share their sessions on Instagram and YouTube. And what they show is simply unbelievable: a wave that just doesn't stop.

The Magic Bay: A Wave That Never Ends

The heart of Imsouane is the Magic Bay, also known as 'The Bay'. It is widely regarded as one of the longest right-hand waves in Africa, and that's no exaggeration.

On a good day, the wave breaks for 700 to 800 metres, from the harbour wall to the far end of the bay. A single ride can last more than two minutes. For anyone used to waves that end in 10 seconds, it's hard to put into words what that means.

What makes it so special: the sandy bottom and the sheltered shape of the bay give the wave an unusually smooth, consistent character. It's ideal for beginners, longboarders and anyone looking to refine their technique without being overpowered by heavy surf.

It comes as no surprise that professional longboarders from all over the world make the trip to Imsouane every winter to perfect their skills on this legendary wave.

Not Just the Bay: Four Spots for Every Level

What sets Imsouane apart from other surf destinations is its variety. The village offers four distinct surf spots:

•       Magic Bay: The queen of waves. Mellow, long and perfect for all levels.

•       The Cathedral: A more powerful spot for intermediate and advanced surfers, with both rights and lefts.

•       The Reef: A technical left-hand wave, for experienced surfers on bigger swells only.

•       The Oued: A relaxed beach break at the river mouth, ideal for complete beginners.

More Than Surfing: Experience the Real Morocco

Imsouane is not an ordinary travel destination. It's a place where time seems to slow down.

In the mornings, blue fishing boats head out from the small harbour into the open sea. By midday, the streets smell of freshly grilled fish. In the evenings, you sit on the rooftop terrace, watch the Atlantic stretch out before you, and understand why some people come here and never want to leave.

The village has held onto its authentic Moroccan soul: Berber culture, fresh local cooking, warm and welcoming people, all under 300 days of sunshine a year.

When Is the Best Time to Surf in Imsouane?

The Magic Bay can be surfed year-round, one of its biggest advantages:

•       September to May: Best time for consistent swell. In winter, waves can reach up to 4.5 metres.

•       June to August: Smaller waves, perfect for absolute beginners. Water temperature up to 22°C.

•       Wetsuit: 4/3mm in winter, 3/2mm or a shorty in summer.
