Why Surf & BJJ in Portugal Are the Perfect Combination

Surfing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu may seem like two completely different sports. One happens in the ocean, the other on the mats.
But spend some time doing both and the connection quickly becomes obvious.
Balance, mobility, endurance, timing, body awareness and the ability to stay calm under pressure are essential in both disciplines. And that's exactly what makes Surf + BJJ such an interesting combination.
Two Sports Built Around Adaptation
You can't control a wave. And you definitely can't completely control the person rolling with you.
Instead, you learn to observe, react and adapt.
Every wave is different. Your position, timing and movements constantly change according to what the ocean is doing.
BJJ works in much the same way. Your training partner moves, creates pressure and changes position, forcing you to find solutions in real time.
In both sports, strength helps, but technique, timing and efficiency usually matter much more.
Balance, Mobility and Body Awareness

Hip mobility, shoulder mobility, core control and coordination play an important role in both surfing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
BJJ constantly takes the body through rotations, transitions and unusual positions. Over time, you develop a much better understanding of how your body moves and where it is in space.
Surfing adds another challenge: everything underneath you is moving.
Your body constantly makes tiny adjustments to remain balanced while the board and water move beneath your feet.
Put the two together and you get two very different ways of developing balance, mobility and body control.
Staying Calm Under Pressure
There is another connection between surfing and BJJ that has little to do with muscles.
Both teach you not to panic.
In Jiu-Jitsu, using all your strength when you're stuck underneath someone usually exhausts you without solving the problem. You gradually learn to breathe, conserve energy and look for the right moment to move.
The ocean teaches a similar lesson.
After a wipeout or during a difficult paddle-out, staying relaxed and managing your breathing can make a huge difference.
Both sports repeatedly put you in situations you can't completely control. Learning to stay composed is part of progressing.
A Full-Body Cross-Training Combination

Surfing involves paddling, explosive pop-ups, balance, rotations and repeated efforts in the water.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu combines pushing, pulling, gripping, core stability, explosive movements and longer periods of sustained effort.
Because the movements are so different, combining the two creates a particularly varied form of cross-training.
And there is another advantage: you are not spending your entire training week doing exactly the same thing.
One day you're trying to figure out how to escape someone's side control. The next you're trying to understand why the Atlantic just sent you flying off your board.
Either way, there is always something to learn.
Technique Beats Strength
Beginners often make exactly the same discovery in both sports: trying harder isn't always the answer.
You can paddle furiously and still miss the wave.
You can use every bit of strength you have in BJJ and still get swept by someone much smaller.
Progress comes from becoming more efficient: better positioning, better timing and better technique.
That learning curve is also one of the reasons both sports become so addictive. There is always another movement, another wave or another detail to understand.
Training Your Mind as Much as Your Body
Two sports that force you to focus completely on the present moment
When you're trying to catch a wave, there isn't much room to think about tomorrow's emails.
When someone is trying to pass your guard, your to-do list tends to disappear too.
Surfing and BJJ both demand concentration and bring your attention back to what is happening right now.
They also have a reliable way of keeping your ego in check.
The ocean doesn't care how well you surfed yesterday. The mats don't either.
