By Sandycamps | Imsouane & Peniche Surf Houses
Whether you're planning your first surf trip or looking for your next wave fix, Morocco and Portugal are two most accessible and rewarding surf destinations for Europeans. Both are just a few hours from most European cities, both offer world-class waves, and both have something truly unique to offer.
But which one is right for you?
We've been running surf houses in both Imsouane, Morocco and Peniche, Portugal since 2017, so we know both destinations inside out. Here's our honest comparison.
The Waves
Imsouane, Morocco

Imsouane is home to the Magic Bay, one of the longest waves in Africa and Europe. On a good day, you can ride a single wave for over 700 metres. An experience unlike anything else in the world. The bay is sheltered, making it ideal for beginners and intermediate surfers looking to build confidence and technique.
For more experienced surfers, the Cathedral break just outside the bay offers powerful, hollow waves with a completely different character.
Best for: Beginners, intermediate surfers, longboarders, anyone chasing long rides.
Peniche, Portugal

Peniche is Portugal's surf capital and home to Supertubos, one of the most powerful beach breaks in Europe and a regular stop on the WSL Championship Tour. But don't let that intimidate you, Peniche is just as welcoming for complete beginners as it is for advanced surfers.
The peninsula's unique geography means there's almost always a wave somewhere, regardless of swell direction or wind. Our surf house is perfectly located to access a wide variety of spots: gentle, rolling waves for beginners, fun breaks for intermediate surfers looking to progress, and powerful hollow waves for the experienced, all within minutes of each other, and all with sandy bottoms.
Best for: All levels, especially beginners looking for the right wave to learn on, intermediate surfers wanting to progress fast, and advanced surfers chasing powerful breaks.
The Weather

Morocco
Imsouane enjoys over 300 days of sunshine per year, with average air temperatures of 22°C and water temperatures around 20°C. Even in winter, you can surf in boardshorts on a warm sunny day. The swell is most consistent from October to April.
Portugal
Peniche has a mild Atlantic climate with warm summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures reach 25-28°C, while winter sits around 14-16°C. Water temperatures are cooler than Morocco, so a wetsuit is recommended year-round. Swell is consistent throughout the year, with the biggest waves arriving in autumn and winter.
Verdict: Morocco wins on sunshine and warmth. Portugal offers more consistent year-round surf variety.
The Experience
Imsouane, Morocco

Imsouane is a small, authentic Moroccan fishing village. Life moves slowly here. The local culture, the food, the landscapes — everything feels a world away from everyday life. Waking up to the smell of fresh mint tea, watching fishermen bring in their catch, and then paddling out into the Magic Bay. It's a unique experience that's hard to find anywhere else.
Our surf house is steps from the beach, in a calm, friendly atmosphere perfect for solo travellers, couples, and groups alike.
Best for: Travellers looking for a genuine cultural experience, total disconnection, and warm water.
Peniche, Portugal

Peniche is a lively surf town with a buzzing atmosphere, great restaurants, and a well-established surf culture. It's easy to get around, English is widely spoken, and the nightlife is fun without being overwhelming.
What makes our location particularly special is the incredible richness of the surrounding area. Within 45 minutes of our surf house, you can visit some of Portugal's most iconic landmarks: the medieval walled town of Óbidos, the giant wave mecca of Nazaré, and the world-heritage surf reserve of Ericeira. Rest days here are never boring.
And coming soon, a wave pool just 15 minutes from our surf house, perfect for beginners to practice in a controlled environment or for experienced surfers to work on specific manoeuvres.
Best for: Surfers of all levels, cultural explorers, anyone wanting variety both in and out of the water.
